Rain on your wedding day

For those planning an outdoor wedding, rain can seem like your arch enemy. You don’t want soaked guests, muddy heels or droopy bouquets! Renting a tent can solve these problems, but you might still wonder, what about the photos?

Never fear. I love rainy weddings for three reasons.

  1. Umbrella shots are some of the most intimate, creative shots around. Picture the two of you, huddled under the same black umbrella, grinning with the knowledge that you just got married. The umbrella creates a central focus point and really incorporates a beautiful story into the picture. A shared umbrella is romantic and elicits a nice “aww” from viewers! Even if you don’t have rain, you can still incorporate an umbrella!
  2. Rain softens and blurs backgrounds. What better way to highlight the two of you in a photograph than to have a completely blurred and softened background? Often a photographer will work with lenses and post-processing to create this effect, but with rain it happens in the most natural, beautiful way. Capturing rain drops as they hit your umbrella will keep eyes focused on the two of you in the foreground of the photo, the diffused light from all of the clouds above will eliminate any harsh shadows, and you’ll end up with a spectacular portrait.
  3. Rain makes colors much more saturated. I can’t explain this one, but it happens. Rain just makes colors “pop” - I’ve done a handful of rainy-day weddings in gardens and the flowers look better than they ever did on a sunny day. The same goes for bridesmaid dresses, details, and any other colorful elements in your wedding.

If I check a forecast for an upcoming wedding and see rain, I eagerly email my clients to assure them - don’t worry! This will be great. Get a big black umbrella that you can both fit under and find comfortable shoes (save the heels for the reception, unless you don’t care about them getting wet/muddy). The wedding photography portraits are something to treasure and you’ll always be able to tell the story of how it rained on your wedding day!
